Tourism is creating some interesting businesses

A number of farmers have significant tourism operations based around the forgotten highway, bridge to know where, rail trail, and whanganui river great walk.

In January the area was crawling with activity based tourists - people who were walking, jet boating, biking, horse riding, canoeing and driving.

The locals are acting as guides & facilitators and providing equipment, food, hospitality, access, flushing toilets.  As well as providing a solid safety net when things go wrong with radio networks and jet boat rescues.

Many of these people (male or female) are going to work in a pair of league shorts and a singlet and carry a low key friendly approach.  So although they are happy to charge well for what they do there is some how a very low key feel to the point of sale and other touch points - there is no real signage and that is great too.

Listening to the proprietors the model works well for them.

The whole thing highlights that there are often opportunities if you can look at the existing assets in a different way - so thinking of the farm as a hospitality venue and adventure tourism location in the Wanganui.  - but its taken time too.
