Social Welfare with a hard edge

NZICA  ran an interesting training session on how the new gifting rules work and the implications for rest home care.

The Ministry of Social Development provided some of the content and it confirmed that we are to provide for ourselves to the grave if possible. They have done a good job of preventing people from depriving themselves of assets to qualify for a subsidy.

The reasons for the position the Ministry is taking are logical.  However they have a hard edge to them that is not something we often see in these sorts of documents - for instance if your spouse dies and gives everything to charity you are expected to contest the will.

Actually I think it is good provided the entire Social Welfare net is managed with the same logical rigour.
